Day 2 | Okehampton to Bath | 184 km

I wake up feeling well rested after a solid night’s sleep. I still have some lingering aches from yesterday, but they’ll have to be largely ignored for the time being. We have another long, difficult day scheduled.

I leave camp just after 6:30 in a steady drizzle. Today’s route has almost as much climbing as yesterday. We meander through a number of villages, some of which include houses with thatched roofs.

The first pit stop of the day is at 60 km, and about two hours later the drizzle tapers off, just in time for the huge climb at Cothelstone. I like to stay seated as much as I can on steep climbs to keep from burning all my matches, since there are lots more hills after this one. Locals ring cowbells as they cheer us on from the roadside.

Eventually we reach the second pit stop, and not long after that is Cheddar Gorge. It’s fairly short but very steep.

At the top it flattens out and I’m pleased to see a gentle section of farmland with minimal hills.

Several hours and many brutal climbs later, we get to Bath. Our basecamp, regrettably, is at the top of a monstrous hill.

It’s been another hard day, and many of us finish later than we’d like. There’s a long queue for the showers, which are actually quite nice with surprisingly good water pressure.
