Everything around me is cold and damp this morning. I struggle to part with my sleeping bag, deflate my mattress and pillow, and pack up the wet tent. I have my usual breakfast of granola I brought from home, coconut yogurt and fruit. I get on the bike at 5:45 and follow a bike path as far as Canmore and then we switch to Route 1A.
We’re in the foothills today so the road is mostly flat with some rolling hills here and there. After 35 km I hear a hissing sound that makes my heart sink. Look at it this way, I tell myself, at least it’s not raining. This has to be one of the prettiest places I’ve ever changed a flat.
The mountain views fade into the distance and are replaced with green pastures. It’s becoming a really beautiful day. After 75 km my hunger returns and a granola bar won’t cut it. I get out last night’s pasta and it doesn’t last long.
I reach Cochrane after 98 km and make a quick stop at the Petro-Canada. I buy a lemonade and remove some extra layers. The temperature has risen to 16 at this point.
Route 567 is busy in spots but it’s absolutely beautiful. It reminds me of Saskatchewan except with more hills.
Once I get to Airdrie I have to navigate through some bike paths before I can get back on the 567. I miss a turn at one point and come upon a Wendy’s. I’ve covered 146 km so far and I’m due for another meal, so I get a baked potato at the drive-thru. It’s exactly what I need and it powers me through the last 30 km.
This is such a friendly campground. I arrive at 2:20 and receive a cold drink from the owners. Paul shows up with the van not too long after and I find a shady spot for my tent. It’s a comfortable 23 degrees right now. There are all kinds of gophers here and they pop out of the ground at random.

Fantastic photos! Sounds like another excellent day of biking and perfect weather. Cool gopher shot, enjoy the ride to Drumheller!
Thanks! I was pleased we had such a clear day with no rain. I didn’t expect to see so many canola fields in this region.
