Day 9 | Bonar Bridge to John O’Groats | 167 km

A 6:00 start has me pedalling in semi-darkness. A number of other riders are doing the same, as we move along the quiet roads with our red lights flashing. It’s just barely bright enough to see, but I have a bus to catch this afternoon so time is of the essence.

Much like yesterday, we have a strong tailwind helping us, with lots of flat stretches through the iconic Scottish moors.

My pit stops today are very quick, just long enough to top up my water and food. Everyone is putting on an extra push today to try and finish early. Fortunately we have a tailwind. It would be a much longer day if the wind were against us.

Not even the intermittent rain can dampen my spirits as I draw closer to the end and see glimpses of the ocean. This route isn’t especially hilly, or lumpy as they say here, but it does include some now and then.

I cross the finish line in the rain at 1:38. I then get the bike packed up and take the bus to Inverness as the first step of my journey home.

Thank you all for your wonderful messages of support along the way. If you have a chance to visit Britain, with or without a bike, I highly recommend it!

  1. Congrats Lynn!! That’s a real achievement, not an easy route! Hope you have some fun days in Edinburgh and a safe trip home. Enjoy!
