Day 7 | Buncrana to Malin Head | 68 km

It’s still raining when I wake up this morning, but we have a schedule to keep. I put on my wet-from-yesterday shoes and get back on the bike, this time for a much shorter ride. Fiona and I start off and fortunately the rain eases up after 10 km.

About 5 km later I turn the corner and see this massive hill. My first response is laughter, then I get in my easiest gear and stay there until I reach the top. It’s as awful as it looks.

Coming down the other side is beautiful and treacherous at the same time. It’s an amazing view of the Urris Valley and the Atlantic Ocean.

Our morning break is in Malin Village after 46 km. Most of the conversation is centred around the big climb up Mamore Gap.

From there it’s less than 20 km to Malin Head, Ireland’s most northerly point. As the light rain returns, we’re told there is much more hill climbing to come.

We cross the finish line at Malin Head one by one and receive medals for completing the tour. After a light lunch at the restaurant down the road, we make our way south to Belfast and part ways.

Thanks to everyone who made this trip as amazing as it was. The organisers, the other participants, the kind people of Ireland and everyone back home who cheered me on. I appreciate it so much.

  1. Congratulations! What awesome accomplishment! (One I have no desire to attempt! ) enjoy the rest of your time away!

  2. I know I’m to late to comment; but there is no need for you to be looking so good! … and completely unaffected… by 7 hard days on a bicycle on that terrain.
    Very well done indeed…congratulations!!
