Day 3 | Lahinch to Galway | 118 km

A sunny forecast is a welcome change from yesterday. Our morning briefing typically takes place outside as we’re getting ready to go, covering whatever we should know about the day’s ride. The location of the morning break and the lunch break is critical, as well as anything we should be sure to visit along the route, or anything that requires caution, like traffic in Galway.

Our first stop of the day is at the Cliffs of Moher, an iconic Irish tourist destination. They are definitely worth the walk up the hill to see them, even in bike shoes.

Fiona and I ride along the coast for quite a distance before turning inland. The landscape is so stunning that I’m frequently taking out my camera to capture it.

The Burren region is famous not only for its rocky terrain but for its archaeological sites. It is spectacular on a clear day like today.

After 47 km we take a break at a café in Ballyvaughan. The next 40 km is similar with rolling hills and beautiful scenery.

For lunch we have a picnic in Kinvara, just up the road from Dunguaire Castle.

The last 30 km of the day is more of a challenge as we encounter a stronger headwind. I take my time with some extra roadside breaks, arriving in Galway just after 4:00.

Tomorrow we head to Westport.
