Day 2 | Killarney to Lahinch | 155 km

We get started at 9 this morning with another long day ahead of us. My legs are tired from yesterday so I take my time, which I’m planning to do all week out of sheer necessity.

We face a number of long, gradual climbs and for the most part the wind direction is in our favour. My GPS shows me a diagram of each hill, but sometimes it’s better to change the screen because I don’t always want to know.

After just 33 km we have a morning break at a coffee shop in Tralee. The nice weather continues as we pass through lush, green farmland. I find it a bit difficult to catch my breath on some of the hills on account of the humidity.

After 70 km it starts raining heavily and I am soaked to the skin. It continues all the way to the lunch stop at 80 km. By the time I reach the Swanky Bar my shoes are full of water, my fingertips are wrinkly and I can’t stop shivering. Fortunately they make excellent soup.

We have to wait around a bit to catch the 3:00 ferry to County Clare, and much to our delight, it stops raining.

Just 30 km later I’m caught in another downpour. At this point I have 45 km to go and it rains most of the way. Some of the road surfaces are so rough that I feel like I’m holding a jackhammer.

It’s fairly common to see abandoned stone houses in these rural areas. They’re a charming addition to the landscape.

I’m relieved when I get to the hotel at 6:45. I wanted to improve on yesterday’s arrival time and I did, but only by 5 minutes.

Lahinch is a beautiful spot and a popular surfing destination. Tomorrow we go to Galway.

  1. Enjoyed the pictures. I am sure you will sleep well. So glad you arrived at your destination safely.

  2. So much rain keeps the green landscapes green-d I suppose but wow- what a full day for the cyclists. Excellent update, Lynn- you’re already well on your way and doing a fab job!!
