Day 9 | Rest Day in Golden

I like knowing that I don’t have to go anywhere today, at least not on two wheels. Golden is a quaint little town full of hikers, snowboarders and mountain bikers.

Our campground sits next to the Columbia River connected to a whole network of trails. Despite all the bear warnings, it’s a peaceful way to put in time.

Once my laundry is done, I explore the old downtown. There are a lot of interesting shops, quirky cafés and patio restaurants. I go to an outdoor store in search of a sleeping bag because mine is coming apart at the seams and constantly shedding feathers. When I look at the prices I decide to hold off.

A passing train on my way back to camp reminds me of home. In the afternoon I give my bike a good cleaning on the bike wash stand, which conveniently has a hose to remove the grime from yesterday’s ride in the rain.

There was a rockslide yesterday that closed the highway to Banff. I’m told that’s now been dealt with so we shouldn’t have any trouble starting out in the morning. If the forecast is correct, we’re in for a wet ride.

  1. Your determination and endurance are amazing. I look forward to your daily posts and pictures.

    1. Thanks Charlie – You must know these mountains well. There’s nothing quite like cycling to really get to know a place up close.
