Day 6 | Knutsford to Mara | 157 km

I leave camp shortly after 4 a.m. Today’s distance concerns me given the weather forecast. I get my three water bottles out of the freezer and I’m on my way, hoping to cover a lot of ground before the sun gets too strong. My goal is to finish by 11.

Once I get through Kamloops I join the Trans-Canada and it’s fairly flat for the first few hours.

I take my first break of the day in Chase after 70 km. I top up my water at the Petro-Canada and have a bag of chickpeas. They’re not very good plain but at least they give me calories.

I do another water stop in Sorrento and continue to plod on. By 8:15 I have only 50 km to go, but the remainder of the ride has more hills.

I do one more water stop in Salmon Arm. By this time I have 30 km to go and it starts with a long, steep hill. When I reach the top I’m drained. Six days of near constant sun exposure in a record-breaking heatwave is taking its toll. I’m so overheated that I’m shivering and feeling sick to my stomach.

I finally get off the Trans-Canada and switch to the 97B, followed by the 97A. Paul passes me which means I’ll be able to access my bag as soon as I get to camp.

When I pull in at 10:50 I’ve got nothing left. The temperature is somewhere in the mid-40’s and I’m ready to collapse. Even setting up my tent is a struggle.

I’m having a hard time with the heat today and it’s difficult to find any shade here. I am eating ice as I type. My phone keeps overheating from too much direct sun. I have to give it a few minutes in the freezer for it to work again.

I’m told it’s supposed to cool off the rest of the week, with highs in the low 30’s.

  1. Wow it sounds incredibly hot. The heat wave has passed out of Vancouver area (finally cool again). Lots of people getting heat stroke over the last few days. Hope you can take a rest day or short ride day very soon and that it cools down for you and the other cyclists. Good luck tomorrow!
