Day 1 | Halifax to Chester | 112 km

It’s a foggy start for us this morning as we navigate our way out of Halifax with a long paceline and an unwelcome headwind.

We meander along the coastline on Route 333 with so much fog it’s difficult to see much of anything.

Peggy’s Cove makes a nice stop after 48 km.

Fortunately the sun comes out as we’re getting ready to leave. What started as a group of eight is now down to four, and Jim, Bill, Mark and I continue our quick pace along St. Margaret’s Bay.

At 72 km we reach Upper Tantalon and follow Route 3 the rest of the way to camp. Our group gets a little strung out at this point and I end up riding the last 40 km solo.

The last 10 km to camp has a surprising number of hills. On the plus side, we’ve had nice smooth pavement all day, much better than what I’m used to in Saint John.

I’m the first to arrive at the campground at 1:30. The clouds look a little ominous, so I quickly pitch the tent and get everything put away.

Less than an hour later the rain begins and is supposed to continue all evening. I can only hope it’ll be over and done by tomorrow.
