Day 8 | Strathdon to Bonar Bridge | 177 km

This is the day many of us have been nervous about, myself included, and it’s been hanging over us all week. The Lecht is perhaps our toughest climb of the tour. It’s 4 km to the summit and features two significant sections with a 20% grade. We’re told that typically half the group tends to walk their bikes up. I want to make sure I’m in the other half.

We come upon it very early in the ride, about 12 km from basecamp, which helps because we’re fairly fresh. Well, as fresh as we can be having already cycled 1,200 km this week.

I want to see how long I can stay seated in my easiest gear, because getting out of the saddle will raise my heart rate even more. I don’t want to burn out before I reach the top.

In this case, there’s no need to say the usual “on your right” to people walking up because they can hear me coming with my breathing. The other day someone remarked, “you’re even panting in a Canadian accent.”

I am elated when I reach the summit. I take a moment to admire the view before cruising down the other side.

We work our way back down to quieter country roads and pedal through farmland with a nice tailwind pushing us.

Our route goes right by Culloden Battlefield, so I drop in for a quick look.

One of the pit stops today is in Inverness. I’m always surprised how many random people in towns and villages, whether waiting at bus stops or walking with children will start clapping and saying “well done!” when they see us coming. Somehow they know what we’re doing.

There is some light rain later in the afternoon, but it stops before I reach basecamp. This is my favourite day of the trip so far. Whatever tomorrow brings, it will include the much-anticipated finish line at John O’Groats.
