It’s a busy morning in Galway. We ride out of the city in small groups for safety in the traffic. I head west with Mark and Geoffrey into a strong headwind for 35 km, with Mark kindly doing much of the work at the front. Once we turn north the landscape starts looking more remote and the wind is a bit more manageable.
After 40 km we gather at a café for our morning break. It’s overcast and about 15 degrees at this point but the wind makes it feel cooler. Two cups of tea help warm me up for the next segment.
It’s a long haul to get to the outdoor lunch stop in Leenane at 82 km, given all the headwinds and crosswinds. We have to put our jackets on to keep the chills at bay as we fuel up.
The last 45 km is more picturesque, including the climb up Sheffrey Pass. We were warned to be careful descending the other side on account of the loose gravel, the tight turns and of course the cliff to our right.
We reach Westport around 5:00 and it feels great to have completed one more day, but it’s not long before we’re discussing tomorrow’s ride to Donegal. It’ll be a challenge based on the distance alone.
