Day 5 | Saint John to Sussex | 94 km

It’s a cold and foggy start this morning with about ten of us leaving camp at the same time. Saint John streets can be confusing, so I lead the way out of town, pausing at each intersection to regroup.

A strong tailwind lets us zip through Rothesay and Quispamsis in short order, then we jump on the Old Hampton Highway and maintain our quick pace up to Kredl’s in Hampton.

The smooth pavement and great scenery on Route 121 takes us through farmland in Bloomfield and Norton as the tailwind continues. It’s turning into a beautiful day.

Then we switch to Riverview Drive, which runs roughly parallel but the condition of the road makes for a bumpy ride. Had I known I would’ve advised everyone to remain on the 121. In any case, it still gets us there.

Sussex has a surprising amount of traffic today with cars inching along the whole length of Main Street, all headed to a flea market of some kind.

Once we get through that congestion we follow Route 114 the rest of the way to camp and enjoy a quiet afternoon in the sun.

Today’s ride seems to have taken a lot out of me. Leading the paceline all day is exhausting. It’s shaping up to be another early night.
